How to date a 12AX7 by its getter flash
The mirror of vaporized barium at the top of the envelope is the closest thing a vacuum tube has to a birth certificate. If you know how to read it.
A collector came into the shop last week with a shoebox of small-signal tubes he had inherited from an uncle in Ottawa. He wanted to know which ones were worth keeping and which he could send along to a friend who repairs guitar amps. We spent an hour under the loupe, sorting by nothing more scientific than the shape of the silvery smudge at the top of each glass envelope.
That smudge is the getter flash, and for a 12AX7 it is very close to a signature.
What the getter actually is
When a tube is pumped down at the factory, the last thing you want inside the envelope is stray gas. So the makers spot-weld a small ring or cup of barium alloy inside the top of the tube. After the seal, a radio-frequency induction coil is held near the envelope, the getter flashes, and the vaporized barium plates the inside of the glass as a mirror. That mirror keeps working for the life of the tube, scavenging gas molecules as they seep in.
The shape and location of the flash are decided by the getter assembly, and every factory had its own habits.
Mullard Blackburn
Long-plate Mullards from Blackburn in the 1950s and early 1960s carry a large, halo-shaped getter — a wide silver ring that sits well above the plate structure. The support is a single wire loop, and if you turn the tube in the light you can usually see a small notch or "square getter" variant on the earliest examples. Base ink codes in the format B7C1 (Blackburn, 1957, week 1) will confirm it. By the mid-60s the flash migrated down and the plates went from long grey to short grey, then to ribbed grey.
Telefunken
The Ulm and Berlin factories used a small, disc-shaped getter with two support wires, seated close to the top mica. The mirror tends to be uniform and dense, without the halo shape. The real tell, of course, is on the bottom: the raised diamond in the center of the glass base, molded into the envelope itself. No diamond, no Telefunken, regardless of what the label says. We turn away perhaps three "Telefunkens" a month on that basis alone.
Amperex
The Heerlen plant in the Netherlands used a pinched, D-shaped getter on the Bugle Boy 12AX7 — that is the classic dark-logo tube with the little cartoon on the side. The flash pools to one side of the envelope rather than making a full ring. Amperex also stamped a delta code on the glass: a triangle, two digits for the year, and one or two for the week. A delta-6L1 is Heerlen, 1961, week 1. The later Holland tubes from the 70s went to a rectangular getter and the plates lost their smoked appearance.
RCA Harrison
American production is the loudest visual signature. The RCA Harrison plant used a large square getter cup with the flash on the underside, so the mirror appears as a broad silver band around the upper third of the envelope rather than at the very top. Black plates with ribbed sides suggest late 1950s; grey plates with a top-hat mica indicate the 60s. Etched codes on the glass in the format 188-3 or similar decode by dot-count and letter.
A tube tells you what it is if you let it. The label is a suggestion. The getter is the record.
What none of this proves
Getter analysis will not tell you whether a tube is worn out. It will tell you where it was made and roughly when, which sets your expectations for construction quality and current draw. A weak Blackburn long-plate is still a Blackburn long-plate, but you would not pay Blackburn money for it.
The other trap is relabeling. Amperex, Mullard, and RCA all supplied glass to Baldwin, Fisher, Magnavox, and half the American consumer brands. A "Fisher" 12AX7 with a D-shaped getter is almost certainly Heerlen glass in a printed sleeve. This is not fraud; it is how the industry worked.
